General Order 64
Section IV
General Clearance Requirements – All Classes Of Lines
45 Climbing Space. (See Appendix E, Figs. 6, 7, 11, 12 and 13.)
(a) Climbing space need be only on one side or corner of the pole or structure, but when reverse arm or buckram construction is used the climbing space shall be maintained in the same corner, section or quadrant of the pole or structure throughout the conductors.
(b) Dimensions: The climbing space on pole structures carrying linearms only (no buckarms) shall have the following dimensions:
1. With conductors of 0 to 7500 volts the climbing space shall be not less than 30 inches except as specified in note (j), Table 1.
2. With conductors of 7500 to 17,000 volts the climbing space shall be not less than 36 inches.
3. With conductors of 17,000 volts or greater the climbing space, used when conductors are alive, shall not be less than 36 inches and should be increased as much as practicable.
(c) Buckarm Construction: Climbing space in buckram construction shall be obtained according to the voltage classifications in the following combinations: (See Appendix E, Figs. 12 and 13.)
1. Where the combination is double line and double buckram construction, leave-
(a) No. 1 pin hole vacant in each double arm 0-750 volts.
(b) No. 1 pin hole vacant in one double arm and No. 1 and No. 2 pin holes vacant in the other double arm from 750 volts above.
2. Where the combination is double buck and single linearm construction or vice versa, the climbing space being left open on the opposite side of the pole from the singlearm, leave-
(a) No. 1 pin hole vacant in the single arm 0-750 volts.
(b) No. 1 pin hole vacant in line and buckarms from 750 volts and above, or leave No. 1 and No. 2 pin holes vacant in the single arm from 750 to 7500 volts.
3. Where the combination is single line and single buckram construction, the climbing space being left open on the opposite side of the pole from the arms, leave-
(a) No. 1 pin hole vacant in the one arm 0-750 volts.
(b) No. 1 pin hole vacant in each arm from 750 volts and above.
(d) Alternative: Where the climbing space is left open in any other corner or section other than specified in (c)2 and (c)3 above, it shall be treated as in (c)1.
