General Order 64
Section IX
Detail Construction Requirements For Signal Lines – Class “S” Circuits
93 Conductors.
(a) Material and Minimum Sizes: Conductors shall be of copper, copper covered steel, galvanized iron or steel, or other suitable material. Line wires shall not be less than the following sizes:
1. Copper or copper covered steel, No. 12 A.W.G.
2. Iron or steel, No. 14 Stl.W.G.
Twisted pair wire used in spans without messenger support shall not be less than the following sizes:
1. Copper No. 14 A.W.G.
2. Copper covered steel, No. 17 A.W.G. or other wire of equivalent tensile strength.
(b) Wires Passing Through Trees: When overhead wires pass through trees, consideration of reliability of service demands that a reasonable amount of tree trimming be done, or the wires suitably protected to prevent leakage.
(c) Wires
or Cables Run Vertically on Poles:
Vertical runs of wires or cables on poles, which are within 6 feet of
any supply line, shall be protected by a wooden moulding 1 ½ inches thick or
otherwise equally insulated and protected.
Vertical risers from
underground cables and ground wires shall, in all cases, be suitably protected
either by 1 ½ - inch wooden moulding or metal conduit or other equivalent in
mechanical strength for a distance of at least 8 feet above the ground. Vertical runs of wires or cables shall be
made so as not to interfere with the climbing space or use of pole steps.
Vertical runs of wires or
cables on steel poles or structures need not be encased in wooden moulding,
provided they are suitably insulated and enclosed in metal conduit, and further
provided that both conduit and structure are grounded.
(d) Signal Wires Run Above Wires of Higher Voltage: (See Rule 41 (d).)
