The following is a brief summary of the environmental monitoring activities that were completed between January 07, 1999 1:00 and 1:00 on January 8, 1999. This summary is based on reports directly received from the field and has not been edited. If you have any questions please contact (818) 597-3407. Please note the item number and the correction that should be made. This report is intended to serve as a communication document and as an instrument for quality control.

Construction Highlights

01/07/99 (Thursday)

Segment 1 (Emidio Pump Station to Copco Road): Report for 7 January 1999: Welding of surplus pipe continued near Emidio Pump Station today. Crews at Grapevine Creek (Stream Crossing #9) moved forward with welding and x-ray occurring on the north side. Backfill crews neared completion of their work on upper Grapevine Road. Coating worked on wrapping welds for the tie in at the top of Grapevine Road, with another crew working nearby to remove the bore shoring boxes. Tie in work was done on the east side of the I-5/Tejon bore today. Coating and backfill continued their work along Tejon Bench. Coating almost finished their work at the Warbler Skip, with one weld left. The paving crew completed their work at the Warbler Skip, on Lebec Road. Fiber optic crews pulled a reel of cable along Lebec Road, between the Warbler Skip and the Flying J. Backfill moved forward along Peace Valley Road next to the Flying J. Non compliance #110012 was issued for violation of B-AQ-1, PC 8 for failure to contain and properly dispose of drips, leaks, and spills. A project memo was issued regarding the ROW violations that continue to occur near Grapevine Creek. Work at both Emidio and Grapevine Stations occurred today.

Segment 2B (Castaic to Sylmar). Report for 01-07-99. Electrical and valve work continued in the Church street vault and the Santa Susana Vault. Electrical work continued south of Weldon Canyon Road. A crew worked to finish FOC boxes along The Old Road, near Weldon Canyon Road and south toward Balboa Rd.

Segment 3 (Sylmar to Los Angeles) Report for 01-07-99. Work continued at the tie-in location south of Balboa Blvd. Clean-up activities took place at several locations, including the area near Larkspur Ave. Electrical work also took place in vaults and at Highland Ave. A crew worked on the Los Feliz Railroad bridge to chip off cement and install sleeves on pipe. In the afternoon, a sideboom damaged utility poles at the work site immediately south of Balboa Blvd. Utility crews were notified and responded for repairs.

Segment 5 (Lynwood to Long Beach): Report for 1-7-99. Crews worked cleaning the rail road right of way and laying base rock south of Hwy 91 near EMP 113. Meanwhile At the Edison station, crews welded a railing around the bore pit, backfilled behind the shoring boxes and worked to prepare the site for inspection prior to boring. Crews working near the fence line with Tosco, pulled electrical cable, backfilled and compacted the ditch and wrapped a short section of exposed line. In addition, crews continued with fabrication of the Edison tie-in segment. Crews working within the Tosco refinery continued fabrication and installment of the oil drain lines, progressed with station electrical and installed the oil metering devices. Segment 4B (Lynwood to El Segundo): Brick layers progressed with coating the Lynwood station site while electrical crews neared completion of the station lighting. Further, crews layed base rock within the station while fiber optic cable was spliced nearby. At El Segundo station, crews continued with the final electrical while forms were constructed around exposed electric conduit in preparation for the red concrete coating.
