Detailed Construction Requirements For Supply Lines

(Class H, L and T Circuits)

 

58.2    Traffic Signals.

Traffic signals supported on overhead suspensions shall be treated as in the following rules:

 

A.    Messengers Clearances.

The suspension messenger of all traffic signals shall be installed to afford the clearances prescribed for span wires; Table 1, Column A, and Table 2, Column A.

 

B.    Clearances Above Thoroughfares.  (See App, G Fig. 56.)

Traffic signals installed on thoroughfares on which neither street railways nor other passenger conveyances (the seating decks of which are in excess of 4 feet above the ground) are operated, shall be suspended so as to permit a clearance of not less than 14 feet between the surface of the thoroughfare and the lowest point of the signal.

Traffic signals installed on thoroughfares on which are operated passenger conveyances other than street railways and on which no railway operates shall be so suspended as to clear the seating decks of such conveyances a vertical distance of 7 feet.

Traffic signals installed on thoroughfares on which street railways are operated by an overhead trolley, and which are not a part of street railway equipment, shall not be less than one foot above the lowest point of the span wire supporting the trolley contact conductor of such street railway where signal is less than 8.5 feet horizontally from the center line of track; nor less than 3 inches above the lowest point of such span wire where the signal is more than 8.5 feet horizontally from center line of track.
  If the street railway is not operated by an overhead trolley contact conductor, the lowest point of the signal shall have a vertical clearance above ground of 22 feet.  If the signal is located more than 8.5 feet from the center line of tracks (horizontally) it may clear the ground vertically not less than 14 feet.

 

C.    Exceptions.

Traffic signals supported on posts and supplied from underground sources are not included herein.
