General Order 64
Section IX
Detail Construction Requirements For Signal Lines – Class “S” Circuits
94 Guy Wires And Anchors.
(a) Use: Where the mechanical loads to be imposed upon the poles or other supporting structures are greater than can be safely supported by the poles or structures alone additional strength shall be provided by the use of guys or other suitable construction. When necessary, guys should also be used wherever conductor stresses are unbalanced, as at angles, or dead ends.
(b) Material: Guys, if of steel, shall be galvanized. Only stranded wire shall be used for guys of ultimate strength exceeding 1800 pounds. Anchor rods used in connection with guy wires or similar attachments shall preferably be galvanized.
Note - Guy wire and anchor rods should be given more liberal safety factors when used in territories where fog conditions prevail.
(c) Anchor Boxing: The ground end of guy wires attached to ground anchors in urban districts exposed to traffic shall be provided when necessary with a substantial wood or metal guard not less than 8 feet long.
(d) Clearance: Wherever two or more guys are attached to the same pole carrying supply conductors there shall be at least 1 foot vertical separation between the points of attachment. Where two or more guys are attached to the same pole and the same grounded anchorage there shall be at least 1 foot vertical separation between the points of attachment at the pole.
(e) Guy
Fastenings: wires where attached to
anchor rods should be protected by suitable guy thimbles. Cedar and other soft wood poles, to which
any guy having a strength of 5000 pounds or more is attached, shall be
protected by use of suitable guy shims, and in this case guy hooks, lagbolts or
other suitable means shall be provided to prevent the guys from slipping along
poles.
The minimum sizes of
messenger cable shall not be less than the following table:
