Eclipse and the grid

There are times when over 50% of electricity is produced by wind and solar. The California Independent System Operator (ISO) is planning for the eclipse by ensuring that enough natural gas fueled power plants and hydro-electric dams are standing by to replace the solar that isn’t producing electricity due to the eclipse. The ISO’s long experience operating our grid, has given them all the tools they need to ensure the reliability of the grid during the eclipse.

Flex Alert

The California Independent System Operator (ISO) is also responsible for issuing Flex Alerts. Flex Alert is a call for consumers to conserve electricity during heat waves when power use outstrips electricity supply and other challenging grid conditions, such as when power plants or power lines are unexpectedly unavailable making electricity deliveries difficult.
